Juan Echanove is the Right to Food Coordinator at the FAO, bringing over 27 years of international experience in food security, agriculture, rural development, and climate change adaptation. Throughout his career, he has worked across Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia with organizations including the European Union, CARE, Oxfam International, and international development agencies. As Vice President for Food and Water Systems at CARE, he led a global portfolio of USD 740 million across 55 countries, helping improve food security and nutrition for millions of smallholder farmers. During his tenure with the European Union in Georgia, he played a key role in agricultural policy reforms and the establishment of over 1,500 farmer cooperatives, earning Georgia’s prestigious Order of the Golden Fleece in recognition of his contributions. Since May 2024, Juan has served as FAO’s Right to Food Coordinator, supporting the advancement of human rights and sustainable agrifood systems worldwide. He is also an author, policy advocate, and frequent contributor to international development discussions.
